Air conditioning used to be luxury, now it is fitted to
almost 80% of new cars on today's roads. With increasing
traffic and road congestion set to worsen vehicle air conditioning
makes a lot of sense.
Air conditioning is designed not only to create a comfortable
atmosphere during the summer months but by filtering, cooling
and drying the air in the winter it can provide a damp free
cabin not to mention steam free windows.
There are two commonly known vehicle air conditioning systems
- straightforward air conditioning ( A/C ) and Climate control.
The principles of both systems are basically the same; climate
control however is more intelligent and can be set to monitor
the cabin air temperature automatically.
Air conditioning is designed to work along side a vehicles
normal system but is often overlooked when a routine service
is carried out. Due to natural refrigerant leakage of about
10-15 % per annum most manufacturers recommend an air conditioning
system be serviced every two years. Unfortunately it is
an ever-increasing fact that most drivers do not realize
there is a problem until their air conditioning fails to
blow cold. Air conditioning systems if not maintained correctly
can be costly to repair, for example, most compressor failures
(often the most expensive component in the system) could
have been avoided by early diagnosis of a leak which would
allow moisture into the system causing unwanted corrosion.
: The refrigerant
type is identified. Vent operations and temperatures are
checked.
The refrigerant is then recovered from the system and electronically
weighed.
The compressor oil is checked.
: Various
components of the system are checked inc drive belt, condenser,
pipe work and pollen filter (if fitted). If requested the
dryer / accumulator is changed at extra cost.
: Evacuation of
the system is carried out; a vacuum is applied to remove
unwanted air and moisture from the sealed system. The vacuum
is then held for a period approx 20 minutes this identifies
if there are any leaks in the system. If no leaks are detected
we continue.
: The manufacturers
recommended amount of refrigerant is electronically weighed
and charged into the system along with specified oil and
a leak detection dye.
: Vent temperatures
are re-checked and if necessary a disinfectant is administered
to the ventilation system at extra cost.
